WIENER FESTWOCHEN_INTO THE CITY 08
The Josefstadt in Vienna and the Józsefváros district of Budapest are a mere two hours apart by car. Their shared name is countered by a host of differences. In Vienna’s eighth district, we are presented with elaborately restored bourgeois apartment buildings in what seems to be a thoroughly scrubbed cityscape. In Budapest’s partner district, construction cranes and majestic vacant lots are urrently appearing among the hundred years old houses, since a big scale urban rehabilitation program just started. These changes will soon transform the district, in one part of it modern housing, shopping centers and offices are now being built.
Behind their major differences, however, these two ‘ eighth districts ‘ share affinities in architecture, proletarian history and social topography.
In order to ‘ lay bare ’ these invisible bonds between the Josefstadt and Józsefváros through artistic practice, the Wiener Festwochen has invited the team of Impex - Contemporary Art Provider to be co- curators. Impex is an independent, flexible , grassroots initiative for work, research and experiments in the field of art and culture . 2006 they organised an interdisciplinary workshop about urban development and cultural practices in the outher 7th, 8th and 9th districts of Budapest.
For ‘ In the Heart of the 8 th District ’ the Impex crew invited visual artists, performers, dancers, designers from Budapest and Vienna. For the mini-festival weekend they will produce seven art projects (installations, temporary events and performances) in various locations which are the central focus of a two-hour tour through the Josefstadt.
The physical center of ‘ In the Heart of the 8 th District ’ is the Hotel Józsefváros , behind which is hidden the Pfeilheim, familiar to every Josefstadt resident as housing for more than 800 students since the late 1960s.
The side program, featuring films and concerts, is focused on Roma-culture in Józsefváros.

9 p.m., Radio C Night: Radio C is a free radio channel which is exclusively devoted to the culture and music of the Roma. Performers on stage: Ponczók ‘Gipsy’ Béla and the Rapport (Ali, Yoker, Jancsi), DJ Kokalo (HU)
